Efficiency of Infrared Radiant Heaters

Radiant efficiency or the radiant factor is:

The percentage of fuel energy transformed into radiant energy from the combustion process

A measure of the radiant component of the total heat output

Note: This is unrelated to the more common efficiency measures: combustion efficiency or AFUE.

Radiant Energy

Radiant energy is emitted by any ‘body’ that is warmer than its surroundings.

Radiant energy is a function of 3 factors:

  • The surface temperature of the emitting body – varies to the  4th power of temperature
  • The surface area of the emitting body
  • The ’emissivity’ factor of the emitting body
