What are MonsterFans HVLS?
Some call these products “Big Fans”; others name them “HVLS Fans,” which stands for high-volume, low-speed. At Schwank, we call them “MonsterFans.” Our fans move massive air volumes at a slow, non-disruptive speed (typically from 0-120 RPM).

Monster comfort in retail, commercial, and industrial applications
Monster principle
Monster comfort in the summer
That is what our little Monsters do. Our Monsters provide a cool breeze in hot summers by moving high volumes of air at a very low, non-disruptive speed (HVLS fans). As the breeze passes over the skin, the fan can create an evaporative cooling effect of 5–7°F (3–4°C) throughout the space.
Cost savings in the winter
Monster comfort is our motto. You lose heat to the ceiling as warm air rises naturally. MonsterFans push warm air down from the ceiling to floor level, where people work. For example, if the heating temperature is set to 65°F (18°C), your heating will run until it reaches 65°F (18°C) at floor level. Eliminate destratification and distribute the warm air evenly throughout the building with our little monsters. This lets your heating system work less, saving you substantial operating costs.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an HVLS fan?
HVLS stands for High Volume, Low Speed. An HVLS fan moves large volumes of air at a slow, non-disruptive speed, creating a gentle, wide-reaching airflow instead of a concentrated blast. In warm weather, that airflow creates an evaporative cooling effect on the skin, cooling the space by 5–7°F. In cooler months, the same slow rotation reverses, pushing warm air that has risen to the ceiling back down to floor level, a process called destratification, which can lower heating costs. Schwank’s MonsterFans line includes three HVLS series: the Style Series for hospitality and commercial interiors, the DD Series for industrial and warehouse spaces, and the GD Series for larger industrial applications.
How much space can one HVLS fan cover?
Coverage depends on the fan’s diameter, blade design, and mounting height, so it varies by model and series. For example, Schwank’s engineering team has demonstrated a configuration with a single fan delivering 35,000 cfm of airflow at variable speeds up to 120 RPM, covering an effective area of roughly 2,100 sq ft (195 m²). Airflow is strongest directly beneath the fan and gradually tapers outward, so larger spaces are typically covered with multiple fans placed at calculated intervals rather than a single oversized unit.
What’s the difference between the Style, DD, and GD Series?
All three are HVLS fans built for different spaces and priorities, as follows:
The Style Series is designed for hospitality and commercial interiors—smaller diameters (7–10 ft), a brushless DC motor, whisper-quiet operation at 39 dBA, and a design-forward look meant to be seen.
The DD (Direct-Drive) Series is built for industrial and warehouse applications, using a gearless direct-drive permanent magnet motor across larger diameters (8–24 ft), with a lifetime warranty on the blades and hub.
The GD (Geared-Drive) Series covers the same 8–24 ft diameter range as the DD Series but uses a helical inline reducer motor for whisper-quiet operation in sensitive spaces. Ideal for warehouses and other industrial applications, it runs at 53–105 rpm and delivers a cooling breeze up to 6 mph across areas as large as 230 ft.
How much cooler does an HVLS fan make a space feel?
An HVLS fan doesn’t lower the actual room temperature; instead, it moves air across your skin to create an evaporative cooling effect. In other words, it makes the space feel cooler than the thermometer reads. At very low airflow (under 20 feet per minute), air feels still. Around 50 feet per minute, airflow is enough to move warm air off the ceiling in winter, a process called destratification. At about 85 feet per minute, occupants start to feel a noticeable cooling effect, and airflow up to roughly 200 feet per minute delivers the maximum cooling effect appropriate for sensitive areas. HVLS fans move large volumes of air within this comfortable range, rather than blasting a concentrated, high-speed stream.
